Man Friday's Rendition of Olympus-Makapuu Hike
Man Friday's account of the HTMC Super Hike XIII on June 23rd. Despite having plans to take the summer off, the call of adventure was too strong, especially after a chance encounter with Richard Fernandez.
The Hike:
Dayle (alias Koolau Bear) offered transport to the hike rendezvous, which was initially declined in favor of a 3-mile jog to the Makapuu lookout. However, Man Friday was intercepted by Ralph Valentino, and transport was accepted.
The hikers gathered at the lookout, where familiar faces appeared, including Dayle Turner, Thea Ferentinos, and Mr. Hiroshi Sakae. With only 6 hikers remaining for the hike, some members dropped out. The weather was a mix of clouds and breezy trade winds, making the hike more tolerable.
Dayle briefed the hikers on the trail, but Man Friday was surprised by the anticipated 9-10 hour hike duration. Nonetheless, the hikers were in good spirits, ready for the challenge ahead.
As the hike progressed, conversations flowed, and the group moved at a steady pace, led by Man Friday, who was determined to make it before sunset. Despite an unfortunate slip, Man Friday pressed on, ignoring the pain from his arm injury. By the time they reached the summit, Richard had taken over the leadership role, making light of the steep ascents with his "banzai" calls.
Lunch was taken at the Kuliouou West summit, with the group ahead of schedule. After some refueling and strategy discussions, they continued onward. Richard charged through the Kuliouou area, despite the sandblasting winds, and Justin's trail markers were greatly appreciated when the group veered off course.
Fatigue Sets In:
As the hike wore on, fatigue began to take its toll, with some hikers falling behind. Man Friday led the charge but struggled with dehydration and muscle spasms. Still, the group pressed forward, exchanging leadership roles until they reached the final descent.
The end of the hike neared as the group made its way to the Makapuu lookout, with everyone arriving about an hour ahead of schedule.
Dayle was the last to arrive, limping but still in high spirits. The group congratulated each other on completing the grueling journey, and all were thankful for the supportive atmosphere.
Acknowledgements:
Special thanks to Dayle Turner for organizing the hike, Richard Fernandez for encouraging participation, and to the entire group.
